Renault Clio Williams back at F1 HQ

One of the finest hot hatches of the 1990s is one of the shrewdest buys of 2018. We take a Renault Clio Williams back to the f1 team's HQ to show you why it's such a clever money car!

It’s in a particularly challenging series of S-bends where the Renault Clio Williams stakes its claim as the bestever hot hatch. The corners, wellsighted and open, are a third-gear delight – where much of the mid-curve fine adjustment is done using the throttle, its 16-valve four-pot singing between 4000 and 6000rpm. Steering, suspension and engine synchronise wonderfully; the Clio taking on the form of a balletic Sports Blue stimulation machine.

25 years of the Renault Clio Williams

Renault originally launched the Clio Williams back in 1993 in a limited-edition run of 3800 cars, but such was the popularity of the car that it ended up building another 1000 or so more. The car was named to celebrate Renault's partnership with the Williams F1 team and featured a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 150bhp. Such was the model's popularity that it has secured a place in the hot hatchback history books.

In 1972 Renault introduced a chic new supermini that changed the way the world viewed mainstream motoring. It was called simply the 5 – but this unimaginative name belied an exciting twist on the typical French small car. Its clean, modernist lines epitomised the 1970s and made a great stylistic leap from the Renault 4, while its innovative packaging, spacious interior and practical hatchback exposed the limitations of the brilliant but flawed Mini.
